Participants will acquire knowledge of the strengths and limitations of MODPATH and MT3D to model groundwater travel times through a regional aquifer system, while also learning about the geologic setting of the Wisconsin Central Sands Region and how MODPATH particle paths can help us better understand the relationship between land use and nitrate concentrations in streams. At the completion of this course, participants will:

1.       Be familiar with the geologic setting of the Wisconsin Central Sands Region and how this impacts the regional groundwater system.

2.       Discuss the strengths and limitations of using either MODPATH or MT3D to simulate travel time distributions through a regional aquifer system.

3.       List various modeling decisions that can impact the results of MODPATH and MT3D simulations and resulting travel time distributions.

4.       Describe how particle tracking is being coupled with in-stream nitrate measurements to relate observed nitrate concentrations to regional land use.
