This presentation explores the coupling between climate-driven surface processes and tectonics in continental rift systems. Participants will gain an understanding of how lake level fluctuations may influence fault behavior and magmatism, with examples from the East African Rift System.

Upon completion of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Describe how hydroclimate variability and lake level fluctuations may influence Coulomb stress changes on normal faults in continental rift systems.

2. Explain the mechanism by which surface unloading (lake level reduction) enhances decompression melting rates in the upper mantle beneath rift basins.

3. Interpret the relationship between African Humid Period climate transitions and observed changes in fault throw rates.

4. Evaluate the differential response of border faults versus intra-rift faults to cyclic lake level loading over geological timescales.

5. Recognize the role of coupled geodynamic-surface processes modeling in understanding climate-tectonic feedbacks in the Earth system.
